Looking back: An emotionally difficult month

Another month comes to an end.
Hello dear readers
Hello dear reader

We as animal rights activists, as the Animal Police organisation, had a really bumpy start to the new year 2025. You could have said that things could only get better. But things have not yet improved. The month of May was really an emotionally exhausting, tearful and loss-filled month for us.
I told you in the last newsletter in April that we found a cat that had been hit by a car on a country road, covered in blood. Unfortunately, he didn't get any better after the emergency operation. In addition to the serious injuries to his jaw, he also suffered other fractures and consequences of the accident, so we decided with a heavy heart to spare him further suffering and pain. After the accident and the operation, I accompanied him every day and was also by his side when he was allowed to fall asleep peacefully. The little darling had two more weeks of love and security. Something that gives us stability in such difficult decisions.
A little later, two young Spaniards asked us for help. A tomcat in a hotel complex in a very poor state of health. The full extent of the injuries only became known to us when the cat was examined by the vet and immediately put on a drip. The vet had to spend hours removing the maggots from his body, which were coming out of every orifice. After a day of hoping and worrying that he would make it, we had to let him go too. The maggots had eaten away his insides to such an extent that he was no longer able to recover. The vet saw no chance of helping him. How long had he been suffering on the street?

Farewells that hurt

We took in a pigeon in July 2024 that had apparently fallen out of the nest. It was still so small that we couldn't even define what kind of bird the chick was at first. A baby pigeon was also a first for us. Doctor Google helped us to raise a beautiful pigeon from the ugly chick. With a lot of love, patience and passion, Juan, the little boss, managed to make little Carlo hand-tame. Last week, in the evening, Carlo suddenly wasn't feeling well. He drooped his wings and no longer wanted to move. From then on it happened so quickly. Carlo's heart stopped beating before we had a chance to take him to the vet. Rest in peace little Carlo, we miss your pushy way of always flying on your head.
In the night just before midnight, we heard a chicken cry from the bush. At this time of night, our chickens are already up in the trees sleeping. So we realised that something was wrong. While we were still running, we realised that a rat had taken the cockerel. We had to climb over the wall and the neighbour's barbed wire in the dark to find the cockerel. He had a twisted leg which caused so much pain that he was screaming for help. The vet diagnosed a compound fracture which was inoperable. Amputation of the leg was discussed, but this would not have given him a happy life. Unfortunately, chickens are not very social animals. With one leg, he would always have been an outsider and would have been a favourite with his fellow hens.
It was with a heavy heart that we had to let him go, in the hope that our cockerel Theo (who I'm sure all of you know) would take him in and look after him.
Among the 26 rabbits in our rabbit enclosure, we found Hanni with an injury to her leg. We know the way to the vet in our sleep by now, so we were on our way again. The diagnosis made me feel sick for a moment. The vet suspected a bacterium, but sent a sample to the lab to be on the safe side. She cut away the dead skin, which had already turned black, as a precaution. Hanni had to stay in a single area with bandages until the results from the laboratory arrived. Unfortunately, the lab results confirmed the vet's vague suspicions. Hanni had aggressive, resistant bacteria on her skin, which had already progressed to the bone. We didn't want to put Hanni the rabbit through this pain. Here, too, we had to think for the animal, she can now sleep peacefully forever.

The Bruno case: a drama in the night

The latest emergency is still keeping us busy day and night.
We rescued a dog from a very bad home who lived on the balcony 24 hours a day, had to do his business there and also sleep there.
Our volunteer Gina took Bruno the dog into her care, where he was allowed to enjoy a real life. After a few months, Gina realised that Bruno was not feeling well. The diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome was a shock at first, but he was quickly put on medication so that Bruno was able to recover a little. But then came a setback. Gina had to take Bruno to the emergency clinic in the middle of the night. A drama unfolded there that almost bordered on failure to render assistance. We decided to drive to another emergency clinic because his condition was becoming increasingly critical. During the car journey, Gina had to stimulate his heart, which suddenly stopped beating. In this situation, the car journey becomes half an eternity. You no longer think, you just act and function. At the second clinic, the vet immediately started the resuscitation measures that were supposed to be carried out at the first clinic, but unfortunately failed to materialise. After 15 minutes she had to give up and could only give the bad news that his heart had stopped beating.
We had to learn to deal with situations like this. It really isn't always easy. But that is also animal welfare. Protecting an animal's soul from suffering and letting it go.
Our intention is to save an animal, to nurse it up, to prepare it for a family, for a forever home. Then to let it go, with the knowledge that everything will be fine now, that the animal can finally enjoy its life.
It is always sad to see that we cannot make this possible for every animal.

Animal welfare is not a business, but a passion!

Storms on Mallorca - and all the animals remained unharmed

Land under....!
At the beginning of May, there was a storm on the island of Mallorca in the region where Finca Noah is located. Even in rain, wind and weather, we look after our animals and make sure they are well. The persistent rain meant that the roads were under water. The water then runs off like a river, including through the grounds of Finca Noah.
The worst affected area was once again that of Pablo the donkey and his mate Argos the horse. Also the neighbouring area of the chickens, geese, ducks, peacocks, turkey and our pig Magritt. The access road to Finca Noah, which runs through the entire property, was washed away. It simply no longer existed. Fortunately, we knew in advance that it was going to rain heavily, so we were able to prepare for it and at least take precautions so that the animals would be fine.
We have had to put up with a lot of flooding and destruction, but fortunately none of the animals have been harmed. They are all doing well!
Repairing the damage caused did not distract us from the fact that we had to let so many animals go this month. We are still grieving for each and every one of these little souls. They are all in our hearts, because no matter how small, young or old the animal is, we look after them every day and are there for them 24 hours a day, building trust and a bond that won't be lost so quickly.
