June 2025

Dear readers,
It's time again for a few lines that will hopefully bring you back to Finca Noah in your thoughts.

One heart and one soul

In the summer of 2023, we rescued two older dogs from the Natura Park killing centre. The emergency call for the two came at the last minute. As is so often the case, Farah, you can help, otherwise they will die!
Seeing two old dogs vegetating in small cages in the summer heat breaks our hearts every time. So without thinking twice, we agreed to let them out of hell. Oskar, 14 years old, and his best friend little Otto, 16 years old. One heart and one soul. They were together for life, had a home together, a family together. We don't know why they were relinquished to Natura Park, all that matters to us is that they were together and gave each other the support they needed to get through the whole thing. Together we are strong, even in the animal kingdom. They were not in a good condition when they arrived. Many rotten teeth that made eating a painful ordeal, which eventually led to them refusing to eat. They were just skin and bones. After the dental operation, they both quickly got well again. We lovingly nursed them up and quickly found out what they enjoyed. Oskar, the shepherd dog - husky mix, did run with us when we took him for a walk through the fields in the neighbourhood, but he actually felt most comfortable at home. Instead of long walks, Oskar loved to run round and round the yard after breakfast. If his friend Otto ran too far away, Oskar would immediately fetch him back. Oskar was like a big friend, brother and family to Otto. He lived the protective instinct 100%. There were times when Oskar's age showed. But when children came to visit or when Oskar saw my son Juan, his heart opened up. Suddenly you had the impression that he was 10 years younger. It's so nice to see how happy animals can be. We always try to read animals that have had an uncertain past. To give them what they love so that they can leave their bad experiences behind them.
Oskar and Otto were with us for two years. Two wonderful years, with love, attention and a feeling of security we were able to give them. On 6 June we had to take Oskar to the vet as an emergency. He could no longer walk on his own, his hind legs just didn't want to. Our suspicion that he had osteoarthritis due to his age was not confirmed. The diagnosis was much worse. A cancerous tumour had burst. If we hadn't realised immediately that it was serious, Oskar would have bled to death inside. Nevertheless, the vet saw no chance of helping him with an operation or medication. After 16 years, Oskar had to close his eyes forever. Juan accompanied him on his last journey, which was an important gesture for both of them. We are sure that Oskar's last thoughts were with his friend Otto. And Oskar is certainly watching from above every day to see how his friend is doing. As I write these lines from the bottom of my heart, the tears come again. I think this story will touch many of you in a similar way. Otto no longer understands the world, he misses his friend Oskar. Now we are asked to help him through this difficult time of loss and grief.

If you are on the island of Mallorca, come and visit our animals and give them a little attention and a loving hand to stroke them. You will see that they are all grateful for such a simple gesture. It doesn't always take much to put a smile on an animal's face.

Overcrowded cages in Son Reus

Through a post on social media, we became aware that all the small cages, 60×60 cm in Son Reus, in the second largest killing centre, are full. In each of these small, loveless, dirty and hot cages, the cats wait 24 hours for the door to open and a caressing hand to greet them. Even worse, they literally scream at you to get me out of here! There are also cats that have long since given up, they crawl into the corner and sometimes refuse their food. There is no other way to explain why the cats in the killing centres are often just skin and bones.
We have bought out all the cats that have been locked up for months and have therefore not been allowed to lie in the sun or run after a leaf blowing by in the wind. I deliberately write "allowed" because they were put in cages and locked up for no reason through no fault of their own.
Among all the rescued cats that are now experiencing love again at Finca Noah, there was one cat that had to be taken to the vet as an emergency after just one night. Her kidney values were catastrophic. It was difficult for her to walk as her paws were bent. She had hardly any muscles to move on her own. Our vet advised us to let this poor little mouse go in peace instead of trying to delay the kidney failure with medication. It always breaks our hearts. In this case, we are comforted by the thought that we were able to spare her an agonising time. Each of these cats from Son Reus has its own personal handicap. I think that makes these little souls special, but people don't see this specialness with their eyes. We look at the animals with our hearts, so we recognise the beauty in an animal even if it doesn't look perfect. A red tomcat with one blind eye. A tabby cat with a bad cold. A tabby cat with a curly tail like a piglet.
These special characteristics would have made it almost impossible for the cats to find a person who would have given them a loving home and freed them from their cages. It's good that there are animal welfare organisations like Farah de Tomi, who don't look away, always try to help and, above all, try to give every animal a second chance at a new life. This path is not always easy, but it is not impossible. Each of you can help us to help many more poor souls. With a donation for the vet costs or food (you can choose yourself what the donation should be used for), with a sponsorship or adoption.

Helping hands

This month, the Animal Police team expanded for a week. Sandra and Urs came to the finca to lend a helping hand. Urs has been with us several times and his fascination for working with animals convinced his wife to help. The two of them have a godchild, our donkey Pablo, who they looked after so lovingly this week. Pablo really enjoyed the attention. His wellness programme in the morning, his watermelon, and the funny conversations..... The three of them have really found each other! With joy in their hearts, they call us every year to reassure us that the sponsorship will continue and that the hay for Pablo is secured.
Urs is no stranger to the farm. Many animals are happy every time he comes to visit. Our sheep Angel was fed by Urs with a milk bottle. Angel was rescued as a baby and was still too small to eat on her own.
Urs still knows the youngest sheepdog, Hutch, as a puppy.
Urs has witnessed the development of the horses. How they have developed from shy and timid creatures to pushy and cheeky horses.
Farah and the animals inspired Urs so much that he is now a member of the Swiss animal welfare organisation Animal Police. He has not only gained an impression of animal welfare on Mallorca through the media, no, he has been able to experience everything first-hand on site and stands 100% behind what Animal Police fights for day in, day out. Rescuing animals and giving them a second life.
Thank you Sandra, thank you Urs, for the great week. You were great.
Their feedback on the week on the farm was positive, despite the rigours and the heat. They are both knocked out but happy!
Nisha and Thorsten (club members) have also actively helped. They are all an enrichment for humans and animals. We are proud to have such a great team. Knowing that you have animal friends who support you in difficult times is worth its weight in gold.
