July 2024

A very warm hello to you dear readers.

Addendum to the June newsletter

You have now had to wait patiently for 6 weeks to find out how Snow the cat has been getting on. Over the last two months we have reported in detail about the cuddly white cat with his bright green eyes. His broken hip was a big issue and long suffering for him. After long discussions with several vets, a decision was made in favour of the animal's welfare. The leg was to be amputated, allowing Snow to lead a carefree and risk-free life.
We flew the cat Snow from Mallorca to Switzerland. Our dear vet, Jann Rapp and his wife Manuela Rapp, agreed to operate on him. Naturally, we accompanied him on this journey. When we arrived in Switzerland, we still had to wait three hours for the appointment. Snow was allowed to recover from the journey in the flat and lie on a sofa for a while. I let Snow out of his travelling bag and was immediately speechless. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I just watched the whole thing for a while. Snow walked around the flat quite naturally and confidently. He jumped on chairs, tables and sofas as if he'd always done it that way. And now please watch out.....
He did the whole thing with 4 legs. Snow was using his leg again and putting weight on it 3 hours before they wanted to amputate it. We were speechless, we couldn't explain it, and we were soooo happy.
The operation was cancelled. Sarah, Snow's loving adopter, moved heaven and earth to get Snow to Germany immediately. The chain of drivers was organised and Snow could finally go to his forever home. Today he is a happy white cat with bright green eyes on four legs, is a free-ranger, lives with a second cat and dog, and enjoys sleeping on the sofa and climbing on everything in the garden.
A big thank you to everyone who believed in a happy ending for Snow.

A miracle we have been waiting for so long....
In the time since I have been working for the animals here at Finca Noah, I have been able to accompany, care for and look after many an animal and say goodbye to it's forever home.
This time, the farewell was mixed with joy, gratitude, pain and lots of tears.

Mischon the Pastor Mallorquín bitch

About two years ago, we rescued the dear Pastor Mallorquín dog, Mischon, from Natura Park, the largest killing centre on the island of Mallorca. At the last minute we were able to get Mischon and her little partner Prinz, a small Labrador, out of the killing centre and bring them to us at Finca Noah. Here Mischon should first arrive, calm down and enjoy regular walks and playtime. To forget her past and her time in Natura Park for a while and to feel like a dog again. Her partner Prinz quickly found a home. Mischon has had less luck so far. Mischon is not an easy dog. She is a very intelligent and quick learner. She is so intelligent that we had to secure the doors to her enclosure, which are all double-lockable, with a chain and padlock. This is because Mischon has worked out how to open the door. It looks very dangerous at first when you stand in front of her locked door, but she loves people, big and small, young and old. Everyone who met Mischon said wow, this is a dog to fall in love with. When we take her for a walk, it becomes a little more difficult. She seems to have had experiences in the past that still characterise her today. Mischon doesn't like cyclists, joggers and fast cars. You have to be prepared for this and have the 40-kilogram dog under control. She seems to get really stressed by fast traffic. I'm not a dog trainer, I took Mischon for a walk every day, but it was really just a walk, far away from training, to get her problem under control.
This summer, luck was on Mischon's side.
After two long years full of hope, two volunteers came to the farm who took Mischon to their hearts from the very first second and spent as much time as possible with her every day. Nischa and Thorsten fell in love with Mischon. They wanted this dog to go through life with them. The dog that is always by their side. The dog, the friend and companion for life. They returned to Switzerland, made a plan, accepted a few changes just so that Mischon could join them. They could hardly wait to get back to Mallorca to see Mischon again. They actually took Mischon with them to Switzerland. She flew for the first time. Flown to a new life, to a home where she gets the attention she needs. Nischa and Thorsten are taking Mischon to a professional dog trainer and as I said before, she is an intelligent dog and is making such great progress because she simply wants to learn.
We are sooooo grateful to the two of them that they saw Mischon and gave her a new life in freedom after such a long time in the enclosure. They recognised that Mischon is an intelligent dog and immediately contacted a very competent dog trainer in Switzerland. She is making great progress and is clearly enjoying learning.
Mischon, thank you for the experience in dealing with dogs that I have learnt through you. I really enjoyed the walks despite all the effort. The last walk with you before you flew to your forever home was very emotional. You will always be in my thoughts. I carry you in my heart. You are such a great dog, I wish you a wonderful life with your lovely people. You belong together.

New residents at Finca Noah
I have a little puzzle for you this time.

Perhaps you can guess which animals we were able to welcome as new arrivals at Finca Noah.

They live on land, but love the water.
They are more sensitive than guard dogs and immediately raise the alarm with their warning calls when they hear strange noises.
They like to collect twigs, bark and leaves for their nests.
They feel emotions just like we humans do. For example, when their partner dies, they grieve for a very long time and withdraw.
They have excellent hearing, sight and smell.
They travel 5 kilometres or more in search of food.

They are constantly looking for food, you would think they are constantly hungry.

They are really cute when they are small, but many people have respect for them when they are fully grown.

Right: We have taken in two geese.

Our two baby geese have now got their plumage. Jakob the male is white, Doris the female is grey. We got them both from our dear animal rights activist and friend Martina. Geese are flock animals, but Martina's geese have simply become too many. With us they enjoy their cuteness factor to the full. We try to raise them both hand-tame so that they are still cute as teenagers and don't get annoyed or even aggressive towards us humans. Two of Jakob's siblings had a genetic defect, and unfortunately we had to put them out of their misery. The genetic defect made it difficult for them to walk. One was even blind. Being blind would not have been the problem, we could have managed that with a lot of patience. Geese can weigh 5kg or more, walking would have been a torture at teenage age. We hope that Doris and Jakob can enjoy a long life with us.
We are still looking for one or two dear sponsors for both geese. You are welcome to contact us if any of you dear readers would like to take on a sponsorship. Normally the sponsors can also choose the names, but in this case the names have to stay. The two of them now listen to their names when you call them.
We would be delighted if the sponsorship would secure the food for both geese every month. They are eating the hair off our heads, as they say.
We would like to thank you dear readers for your time and perseverance in reading. We thank you very much and invite each and every one of you to Finca Noah to get to know all our animals personally, which we introduce to you every month in the newsletter and tell their stories.

Best regards from Finca Noah.
Nadine
